S.O.O.S. ORCHID SHOW 2011 RULES OF ENTRY 1. The Valentine's Orchid Show, sponsored by the Southern Ontario Orchid Society, will be held at the Toronto Botanical Garden Friday, February 11, 2011 to Sunday, February 13, 2011. There is no show theme. However, individual exhibits may have their own theme. 2. Each exhibitor agrees, upon entry, to abide by the Rules and Regulations of the show. All questions regarding the interpretation of these Rules or Regulations shall be referred to the General Show Chair for a decision. 3. Exhibitors may set up exhibits from 12:00noon to 10:00 p.m. on Friday February 11, 2011. Entries will be accepted for judging only up to 9:00 p.m. Late entries may be exhibited but will not be judged. All exhibits must be left in place until 5:15 p.m. Sunday, February 13, 2011. 4. Requests for exhibition space should be sent to: Tom Atkinson 5. All shipments of plants, cut flowers or exhibit material to be displayed by the host society, must be received no later than 12:00 noon Friday, February 11, 2011. Material sent for exhibition must be sent postpaid to: Tom Atkinson In the event that the exhibitor of cut flowers cannot be present, the Show Committee will display the material to the best advantage. If return of material is requested, it will be returned at the exhibitor's expense. All exhibits not claimed by the exhibitor, or the disposal of which is not specified, will be distributed by the Show Committee. 6. There are no fees to the exhibitor for entries or assistance in setting up exhibits. 7. Neither the Toronto Botanical Garden nor the Southern Ontario Orchid Society is responsible for the loss or damage of any plants, blooms, corsages, containers or other property of exhibitors. However, every precaution will be exercised for their safety. 8. Reasonable effort will be made to provide the space requested, but the Show Committee reserves the right to limit space allocated to individual exhibitors. 9. Standard rectangular tables skirted with brown or black material will be furnished without cost; however the exhibitors must furnish any other staging materials. 10. Foliage plants, moss, etc. may supplement exhibits, but neither artificial nor dyed moss or foliage of any kind is permitted, with the exception of artificial grass used as a floor covering. Plants in flower or cut flowers other than orchids will not be permitted in an exhibit. No dyed flowers will be permitted in exhibit or sales area. 11. All plants or cut flowers exhibited must be properly labeled without identification of the owner until judged. SOOS will provide display identification cards after judging. 12. Any plant entered for a cultural award must have been the property of the exhibitor for at least one year. 13. For purposes of this schedule “hybrid” means a cross made within the genus listed, unless preceded by the word “intergeneric”, in which case two or more different genera are used in the cross. 14. The appropriate class for intergeneric hybrids shall be the first class for intergeneric crosses which lists one of the genera making up the hybrid. 16. The same exhibit cannot be entered in more than one class. Any individual plant or cut flower can be entered in one of classes 10 - 100 and in class 102 (Specimen). No other double entries permitted . 17. All exhibits, plants, and cut flowers must be officially entered by class with the Entry Committee to be considered for ribbon judging. Cut flowers and flowering plants shall be considered equally in judging. 18. In order to sell orchid plants at the show, an exhibitor must place, in the show, an exhibit of at least 11 orchid plants or cut inflorescences, or an educational display of at least 5 lineal feet, per 5 foot sales table. Display quality must conform to the quality of the show. Both the exhibit and the sales area of each vender will be evaluated. Next year's invitations will be issued on the basis of this evaluation. Any plants sold out of an exhibit shall not be removed from the exhibit before the show is closed (Sunday 5:15pm). 19. Judging will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m. Saturday, February 12, 2011. Judges and clerks are expected to familiarize themselves with the show rules and regulations. Only properly authorized persons, will be permitted in the show area during judging. The decisions of the judges shall be final. 20. Entries not in accordance with the schedule will be disqualified, and the Show Committee reserves the right to remove all inferior exhibits or any part of them. 21. First, second and third place ribbons may be awarded in each class at the discretion of the judges. Trophies will be awarded as designated. Judges have the authority to award or withhold any ribbon or trophy and may subdivide any class where warranted. AOS Judging and AwardsAn American Orchid Society (A.O.S.) sanctioned show must comply with the current rules of the American Orchid Society Handbook on Judging and Exhibition and any interim rules issued by the A.O.S . Judging Committee . At the show, there must be three or more judges accredited by the American Orchid Society (A.O.S.). The decisions of these judges will be final. In addition to the ribbons and/or trophies awarded, the judges may consider plants and flowers for American Orchid Society awards. Each person entering plants or flowers in the show agrees to accept any award given and to pay the American Orchid Society for such awards. If an entrant does not wish to accept the A.O.S. awards, this must be indicated before entering the plants for ribbon judging. . If the flowers have been previously exhibited at an A.O.S. approved function, they are considered to have been screened and, therefore, are not eligible for further consideration. They should be marked “ Not for AOS judging ”. This will not disqualify the flower from consideration in the proper ribbon or trophy class.
